Advent: The religious season preceding Christmas. Advent calendars are often filled with treats for children to count down the days to Christmas.

candy cane: A peppermint confection that typically comes in a cane-shaped stick and that often features red and white stripes.

caroling: The act of going door-to-door to sing Christmas songs to neighbors.

Christmas: A Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Also a nationally recognized legal holiday that falls on December 25 of each year.

Christmas carol: A traditional song with Christmas themes.

Christmas cookies: Traditional holiday sweets, often decorated with colorful icing and sprinkles and cut into holiday shapes such as angels, snowmen and Christmas trees. Often given as gifts.

Christmas decorations: Lights and ornaments, often in red in green, that adorn homes and Christmas trees and add a festive air to the celebrations.

Christmas tree: A tree, usually an evergreen, that is decorated with ornaments and tinsel and topped with a star or angel to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

eggnog: A thick, sweet beverage made of eggs, cream and sugar. Often mixed with brandy and garnished with nutmeg.

elf: A fictional, miniature resident of the North Pole and helper of Santa Claus.
